A Monumental Journey: Our Family Visit to Mount Rushmore (Summer 2021)
Our family embarked on an unforgettable journey to Mount Rushmore, accompanied by some of our fellow full-time traveling families. From learning about the fascinating history behind the monument to capturing stunning photos of the iconic sculpture, our trip was filled with excitement and patriotism.
In this blog post, we'll share our experience and provide some interesting tidbits about the history of Mount Rushmore, the artist, and the surrounding area.
The History and Making of Mount Rushmore
Our adventure began at the Mount Rushmore museum, where we delved into the history of this iconic monument. We learned about the selection of the location, the tools and technology used for carving, and the man behind the project. Mount Rushmore was conceived by South Dakota historian Doane Robinson in 1923 as a means to promote tourism in the region.
Gutzon Borglum, an American sculptor, was the driving force behind the project, which began in 1927 and took 14 years to complete.
Hiking the Presidential Trail
After absorbing the rich history of the monument, we embarked on a hike along the Presidential Trail. This 0.6-mile loop offered breathtaking views of the sculpture from various angles, allowing us to capture numerous stunning photos.
As we hiked, we marveled at the massive granite faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln - each a testament to the incredible skill and vision of the artists and workers involved.
A Patriotic Presentation
Our day concluded with a patriotic presentation in the Mount Rushmore auditorium. Former service members were called from the audience to raise the flag and share their knowledge of U.S. history.
The flags lining the walkway served as a reminder that while Mount Rushmore is an American monument, its appeal and significance extend far beyond the nation's borders.
Exploring the Region
Mount Rushmore is nestled within the Black Hills of South Dakota, a region brimming with natural beauty and historical attractions.
During our visit, we drove back to our campground and spotted buffalo roaming the land. Other popular attractions in the area include the Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and the picturesque town of Keystone. The region offers plenty of outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, and wildlife spotting, ensuring that there's something for everyone to enjoy.
Conclusion
Our family visit to Mount Rushmore in the summer of 2021 was an experience we will never forget. From learning about the monument's history to witnessing the breathtaking views of the Presidential Trail, our trip was a perfect blend of education, adventure, and patriotism.
We encourage everyone to take the opportunity to visit this iconic American landmark and explore the beautiful Black Hills region.
